A Hike Through Tai Tam
Urban Oasis in Hong Kong
Hong Kong, a city synonymous with skyscrapers and bustling markets, offers a surprising escape: its lush countryside. Recently, I embarked on a day hike in Tai Tam Country Park, a hidden gem just a short journey from the city centre.
My adventure began at Quarry Bay MTR station. From there, I followed the somewhat hidden trails that wind their way into the park. The initial stairs were scary, but the rewards were immediate. As I ascended, the urban clamour faded, replaced by the sounds of nature – the rustling of leaves, the flowing of water, the chirping of birds, and the gentle breeze.
The scenery within Tai Tam Country Park was breathtaking. Lush green forests blanketed the hills, while the Tai Tam Reservoir shimmered invitingly below. I paused at several viewpoints, captivated by the panoramic vistas – the reservoir reflecting the azure sky, the distant city skyline a hazy backdrop. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome contrast to the urban haze.
After exploring the park, I opted for a scenic return journey via bus. The bus route offered a different perspective, driving above the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir Dam. The views were spectacular, showcasing the dramatic topography of the region.
This hike was a powerful reminder of the importance of escaping the urban jungle and immersing oneself in the beauty of the natural world. Tai Tam Country Park offers a unique blend of adventure and tranquillity, a testament to the city's unexpected diversity.
